Keyword research is a technique used by the search engine professionals to find the actual keywords that are entered by the users when searching on the internet. Keyword research is important for individuals as well as organizations because if the wrong keywords are used then search engines and customers will not be able to find them. Also all the efforts that are put in to get a high rank for the website go into vain.

The keyword research process is broken down into phases that are numbered phase 0 through phase 5. The phase 0 is called the demolishing misconceptions phase. Those who promote their websites have many misconceptions including that they know which keywords the user would search for. Another misconception is that generic terms have to be used for higher rankings of the website in the search engines. The phase 1 includes creating a list of potential keywords and phrases that can possibly be used by users when searching. Once this list is made, it must be rechecked.

The phase 2 includes putting in the keywords in a research tool and finding out how many people search for that particular term everyday. Phase 3 requires one to finalize the keyword list and optimizing the keywords. Phase 4 of keyword research requires using the keywords in the content of the website. It must be ensured that the keywords appear in proper places in the content and that they are not repeated unnecessarily. Phase 5 includes monitoring the keywords and making necessary changes whenever required or updating the content to stay in competition.
